Tips for Choosing Wedding Jewelry

We've already talked a lot about weddings -- from picking the right bouquet to selecting the right destination, but there's so much more that goes into wedding planning.

What the bride will wear is a huge consideration. The dress has to be perfect and fit the bride's budget after all. But sometimes it's the small details that truly make the bride radiant. That's why today we're talking wedding jewelry. Here are a few tips to help you pick the best pieces.

Take Heirloom Pieces With You

If you're going with traditional wedding jewelry and heirloom pieces, select them and bring them with you as you plan the rest of your wardrobe around them. Not all dresses and necklaces will work together, so if you want to wear your grandmother's teardrop necklace with your gown, you have to make sure the neckline of your gown accommodates your choices.

Don't Be Afraid of Costume Pieces

Costume jewelry works well for many brides, if you know what to look for. It can also save you a fortune -- particularly if you are looking for bold, chunky necklaces or earrings that really stand out. Just remember that synthetic gemstones are a lot more forgiving than cheap or poorly plated metals. The last thing a bride needs is a necklace that turns her neck green!

Keep it Simple

Sometimes it's tempting to overdo it with the jewelry. Remember that accessories still take a back seat to your overall appearance. Look for items that compliment your style without making you look overdecorated and gaudy. Gowns with intricate designs and lots of lace typically call for less ornate jewelry.

Don't Forget the Bridesmaids

If you want a coordinated look, work with your bridesmaids to select pieces that flatter everyone and coordinate well with the bridesmaids' dresses. This doesn't necessarily mean that every woman should wear the same earring and the same necklace. Consistent style doesn't have to mean everyone has to be dressed exactly alike. Individuality is important too.

Heather & Chris: Fun & Fabulous Pinwheel Wedding

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of working with Heather on her upcoming May wedding.  I could tell via our email chats that her wedding was going to be a fun and fablous affair filled with lots of clever handcreated touches.

Chris and Heather were married on May 27, 2012 in Bristow, Virginia at The Bristow Manor Golf Club. This was a "redo" wedding for them as they were married the first time on April 6, 2010, before her husband was deployed to Iraq. They didn't have a chance to have all our family there for that wedding, so this one was very special for them. The weather was beautiful, the day was perfect and the memories will be forever!

She even went the diy pinwheel route on some of her items - such as the above pinwheel cupcake toppers. How cute are they paired with our coordinating cupcake wrappers?

5 Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Colors

When planning for your wedding, it's normal to want everything to be absolutely perfect from the location to colors to the family and friends gathered around you to help you celebrate your big day. If you haven't decided on a color palette yet, here are six great tips to help you choose your wedding colors.

Picking the Perfect Wedding Colors

1. Take in the Scenery. Your wedding location is one of the first places you should look for inspiration. After all, if the colors you choose don't coordinate with your surroundings, you're likely to be disappointed. Lime green and orange probably won't look that great in a church with teal and purple accents.

2. Start with One Color. Stop worrying about color combinations, if the task is overwhelming. Think about one dominant wedding color that you want to use. Once you've found your main color, then move on to picking one or two accent colors.

3. Consider Your Flower Options. It can be extremely difficult to color match intense hues with traditional flowers. Make sure your color options can be reproduced by mother nature if you insist of real floral bouquets. If you're up for a new spin--pardon the pun--on wedding flowers, consider Pinwhirls bouquets and pinwheels that look great in any color combinations.

4. Carry Swatches. Once you've picked your wedding colors, get them on swatches and carry them with you in your planner or purse. Valentine's Day is popular day to get married. And why not? A day already filled with love and romance is the perfect time to start the rest of your lives together. If you're looking for ways to plan a Valentine's Day wedding while keeping the event fun and fresh and not too cliche, we've got some great wedding planning tips for you!

Use Red or Pink as an Accent Color

Instead of using red and pink together as your main color, try black and white with small accents of either red or pink for your attire and wedding decor. Since the arrival of little Gabe in April I've found it difficult

balancing this pinwhirls business and a newborn.

Some days, when I look at my to do list, I think it's impossible

and some days I just want to give up.

But, it's news like this that keeps me going.

Molly & Logan: Pinwheels Galore

I had the pleasure of working with Molly beginning in the fall of 2008. She was one of those totally organized brides whom I love to work with as not only wasn't her wedding not until May of 2009 (which gave us lots of time to work out the details), she also already had the perfect vision of her wedding day. And, lucky for me, her vision involved a fun pinwheel filled wedding.

She is pictured with her hubby, Logan, above. As you can see pinwheels were pulled into almost every aspect of their big day. Yes, those are fondant pinwheels, on her wedding cake! How cool is that? I just love when something looks good enough to eat, and considering my love for pinwheels, I would so love to take a bite out of one of these cuties. (Although who am I kidding? I couldn't destroy such a precious pinwheel - even if I am 38 weeks pregnant and am craving all things sugar.) :)

And, just look at her Save the Dates - not only are they gorgeous, the cards were also enclosed in a pinwheel fold. See, I wasn't fibbing when I said that pinwheels were used in almost every aspect of the wedding. (Save the Date and Invite Photos courtesy of Giddy Ink.)

The invites were equally as gorgeous - I was instantly in love with their monogram. Just look how the 'M' and the 'L' melt together. Just perfect.

As Molly and Logan left the church they were greeted by their guests waving these 'Love' themed pinwheels. Molly did a great job finding the above scrapbook paper that matched her colors and theme perfectly.

In all of their photos you can just see how much they enjoyed their fun-filled day.

Another just totally unique part of their wedding - the wedding party left the church and arrived at the reception in a trolley. Yes, you heard me right - a trolley. It doesn't get much more fun than that. And no, they aren't in San Francisco - they wed in Ohio!

When guests arrived at the reception hall, they were instructed where to seat with our pinwheel place cards. Once again, Molly found the perfect favor for these little cuties and I printed their wedding monogram on the inside of these pinwheels. Lisa from Pen & Ink Calligraphy did an awesome job hand lettering the place cards.

The pinwheels were propped into candy filled votive holders.

Oh, just look at the beautiful sea of pinwheels ...

Kelly & Liam: Beautiful Blue Beach Wedding

Just as this past summer was nearing an end, I was contacted by Eclatante Design to provide pinwheels for Kelly & Liam's (pictured above) September beach wedding. Their colors - blue (very close to tiffany), tan, and white - just perfect for a beach wedding.

Indira & Nevin: Contagiously Cheery Wedding

I began working with Indie in early 2009 for her May wedding. Based on our correspondence I just new that this was going to be one unforgettably fun wedding. And sure enough, when she forwarded me a link to her photos, the amount of fun she and her guests had radiated from all of the still photos. AND - just look at the colors - so bright and cheery.

I created wedding pinwheels for her young guests. (By the way, isn't this one a doll? I'm envious of her curly locks! And the headband - CUTE!) The pinwheels were made with a line of paper called Jacks - of course you can't tell from the black and white photo but the paper features little toy Jacks in all sorts of bright colors.

We also created coordinating table number signs. And isn't this centerpiece - unique? Unique in only the best of ways! In a million years I would have never thought of incorporating a garden troll into a wedding centerpiece, but just like all of the other details of her wedding, someone it just works - in a big way!

Ohhh, and the cupcakes. Yum-mmmmmmyyyyy. I'm drooling even though I just finished dessert with my dinner.

Jessica & Jason: Wedding Pinwheels Featured on 100 Layer Cake

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of working with Jessica, a Canadian bride, on pinwheels for her August wedding which took place at a chateau just outside of Montreal. I just learned that their wedding was featured on 100 Layer Cake. Which isn't surprising considering that every single detail was perfect for this sophisticated event with a family style flair.

Our pinwheel place cards are featured in the above photo. I love the simpleness of this place setting - just our pinwheel placed on a white place setting but it somehow looks so elegant. And, aren't those paper placemats to die for?

Sally & Dominic - The Perfect English Wedding

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of working with Sally & Dominic (actually, mostly Sally) on creating pinwheels for her perfect English wedding. When the original color palette was forwarded I must admit that I was a little concerned, but the more I began working to create these papers, the more I fell in love. How could one not? The color palette is just so fresh and fun! And I must admit that these are probably one of my favorite custom pinwheel creations ever! I did do some major sweating over the shipment of these fragile items all the way to England - I tend to worry about shipments arriving safely, and thankfully these did!

I was super ecstatic when I received a message from Sally (pictured above with her new hubby Dominic) earlier this October with links to her wedding and specific links to the pinwheels. Not only do I love seeing how my pinwheels are used, call me nosey, but after working for brides for such great lengths of time, I also love to see how all of their other wedding details. And of course, finally getting to put a face to a name is also nice. :)

Sally chose to use the pinwheels as place cards as well. I love her silver tins and it appears that the sand filler worked perfectly.

Pinwheels spin, spin, spinning away. Love it!

And also loving the building in the background. So reminiscent of the English countryside.
